Guernsey maintain Upton dominance
Guernsey achieved its’ first and ultimately only success of the inter insular weekend by continuing their dominance in the Snooker Upton – now classed as a ‘B’ inter insular. An 11-5 victory was fully deserved in a landmark match held across all four tables at the Ex-Service Club. With Jersey fielding 11-year-old Archie Greir, the club obtained special licence dispensation for Guernsey to get its’ first close look at the prodigious rising talent.
Greir is undoubtedly a name to keep an eye on in the future, but the Sarnian strength in depth with its’ healthier league set up again proved too strong in building a 3-1 lead, with Clayton Le Noury and Norrie Webb looking particularly good.
The second rotation of a format where all four players of each team played one frame against the other ended with two black ball finishes that would see the match tied at 4-4. Webb’s success against Dany Brannan was matched by Ryan Swann edging Le Noury 60-53, which suggested a close encounter was on the cards.
But the third session was one-way traffic as Guernsey won all four matches to move to within one of victory. Danny Marquand picked up his first victory against Ryan Swann, who ended the day with two wins, whilst all the other Jersey players finished with one.
The final rotation was all about who would clinch overall victory, and the honour just went to Le Noury in beating Brannan, but Marquand’s 70-14 success against Greir wasn’t far behind. Mark Gauvain added Guernsey’s last point to finish with three wins like Le Noury and Webb, who was denied a clean sweep by Swann.
